On July 20-21 of this year, an international seminar on "Creating and managing a drought information system" was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the United Nations Satellite Center (UNOSAT). Representatives of the agency took part in it.

Objectives of the workshop:

• Exchange of knowledge about the currently available elements of the information system, as well as tools for drought monitoring and their use in Central Asia, as well as assessment of options for integrating various solutions for drought, fires, etc. into one system;
• Increase the capacity of government officials and strengthen drought monitoring and management capabilities at the national level.

Expected results of this workshop:

• Increasing the capacity of relevant research institutes in Central Asian countries, as well as State organizations in the field of emergency situations, meteorology, ecology, land management and space;
• Enhanced support for ministries in target countries to participate in joint discussions at the regional and sub-regional levels, enabling evidence-based decisions to improve drought management at the national and sub-regional levels.
